Matteo Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Exceptional Talent in Silver Lining for Struggling Lazio

The atmosphere at their home stadium was far from happy during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had let in 10 goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their ongoing dissent in a long-running conflict with president Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?

Was the team's progress unraveling, or was there ever a thread keeping it intact in the first place? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, before he to later acknowledge that the board had omitted to inform him about a registration embargo they were facing for fiscal problems. Rumours that his departure was imminent were not true, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.

Lazio became as messy in their performances as off the field, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the rest of their first five games, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to ascertain if they're getting better or collapsing.

Matteo's Unexpected Comeback

One individual continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to feature for Lazio this year. He was on last season with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, Lazio were attempting to stay there a while longer. The signing restriction forced a rethink. They were unable to reduce their roster lacking backup options.

He signed in the first place when Sarri was last in charge, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in 2022-23, almost all of those from the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom but then not selecting him."

Uncovering His Best Role

Maybe Sarri was persistently working to work out the specific characteristics of his skill set. Labeled as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings while playing for Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
