Pat Cummins Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry
The pace bowler has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an impressive average.
Australia's chair of selectors the selector has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.
There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.
Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Western Australia.
The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.
"It's clear that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, not just the back issue, but further aspects," he commented.
"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."
Injury History
He was sidelined the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.
There is a track record of recurring issues, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in four years.
The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the Ashes.
He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.
Contingency Plans
In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.
Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the national team for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a safety move because of soreness in his side.
The selector characterized it as a "small issue and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."
"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
