Resurgent Daniil Medvedev Claims First Title in Over Two Years
Nineteen of Daniil Medvedev's twenty-one titles have been earned on hard surfaces
A resurgent Medvedev secured his maiden championship for over two years with a win over Frenchman Moutet in the competition title decider.
The athlete, a former number one, has experienced a challenging period, winning just a single victory at the Grand Slams and experiencing a difficult moment at the US Open.
His inconsistency on the professional circuit - and struggles with his serve in specific - resulted in him exiting of the world's top 10 and finally separating with long-term mentor his previous coach.
Presently working with his coach and Rohan Goetzke, he has consistently improved in the recent weeks - culminating in a hard-fought three-set victory over Frenchman Corentin Moutet.
It is his maiden title after the 2023 Rome Masters and maiden on a hard surface from March of the previous year.
Success also indicates the Russian has achieved 21 titles at 21 various events.
"This marks the first occasion I'm at a tournament with my children simultaneously, so to win a trophy is especially meaningful," stated tennis professional Daniil Medvedev.
"This title is in tribute of my child her name, because the initial championship I won when my child her name was born was for her."
Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, had lost his past six title deciders, featuring in that event previously this season.
Medvedev's retrieving strategy and frequent outbursts on court had caused observers to doubt if his skill to perform at the highest level was over.
Yet the player has made changes in recent weeks, striving to advance forward and play assertively, reinforced by an improved serving game.
The champion came back from a deficit in the initial set against the challenging Moutet, taking four of the concluding five exchanges to take the lead.
Both players traded service breaks in the following set before Moutet, bidding for his first tour victory, took control to create a final set.
He saved 4 early chances in a competitive deciding set before the Russian broke to that score to close out the victory.
Fittingly, he earned victory with a rally at the front of the court, with his opponent incapable to handle a return after a lengthy match.
