Time is optimal to switch Man Utd's formation - Ruben Amorim states.

Man Utd players ahead of a match
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes was one of multiple first-team players absent from the holiday period victory against Newcastle.

Boss Ruben Amorim says that altering Man Utd's formation due to external pressure would have meant "his demise" for him.

For the first time against Newcastle United, Amorim abandoned his trademark back three formation with wing-backs and instead use an traditional back four shielded by two holding midfielders.

By his own admission this effectively became a back six in the final stages as his squad dug in for a win - securing only their second clean sheet of the season.

Although he once famously stated that not even the highest authority could pressure him to change his system, Amorim insists the ability to play with different setups has consistently been part of his strategy.

Yet, he emphasizes he could only make the switch when his team were doing at an acceptable level - lest it would seem as if he was succumbing to external criticism.

"At the time I came here the previous campaign, I understood maybe I don't have the players to play well in that formation, but it was the beginning of a journey," he stated.

"Our aim was to establish an identity. Currently is a different juncture. We don't have a lot of personnel, and we must be flexible, so they see why we are changing.

"It is not because of the influence of journalists, or the fans.

"When media discuss changing the formation repeatedly, I can't change because the players will understand I'm changing because of you and I feel that is the downfall for the coach.

"Once we are playing well in our preferred setup, that becomes the moment to adapt.

"We are going to become a better squad because when our full complement of players are back, we are not planning to employ a back three exclusively."

Squad Challenges Loom Large

With only two wins in their last eight outings prior to beating Newcastle, it is questionable whether Amorim is right to say his side have been playing well.

He is, nonetheless, operating with a depleted squad, with seven senior stars already confirmed absent for the upcoming home game against winless Wolves.

That total will rise if playmaker Mason Mount is unable to shake off the injury that led to his withdrawal from the Newcastle game at the interval.

Skipper Bruno Fernandes is a key name who will be absent for the Wolves match, despite the fact he is reportedly urging his boss to allow him to return following his muscle injury.

"Bruno is already saying he needs to train," said Amorim. "But there is absolutely no possibility he is going to feature against Wolves. No way. You can write that."

The Captain's Role Endures

Nevertheless, the 31-year-old will probably continue to be a prominent presence, as while most unavailable stars view matches from a private box, Fernandes was observed monitoring the warm-ups from the entrance of the tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim anticipates his captain to continue offering insight.

"He is a leader," he declared. "He cannot be that guy that when he is not playing, he's silent and offering advice. He's constantly vocal. That's why he's the captain.

"He has negative aspects at times - his mannerisms he moves his arms - but he has a multitude of strengths. Even after he recovers, he heads to observe the rest of the squad training. There are a many things you don't see.

"I don't know if he desires my position or not, but he's a born leader. He is a leader."

Recovery Timeline for Key Players

Although the specific date for Fernandes' comeback - and that of other injured stars like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - remains uncertain, before the conclusion of January, United will welcome back Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from international duty.
