Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Here's a dare for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Sit down with your loved one and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. On the surface, it might appear like typical biological terror, but inside Together exists a deep meditation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The story begins when the couple transition from the big city to the countryside for her career. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence begins influencing the pair. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The entire film is a slow burn fright fest, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but never too gross) body horror, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and distant from his network of friends. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is intensified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the type of challenges that are inherent in most partnerships a decade in. At their core, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Conversely, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your partner and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can undertake today.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu at present.
