Users Discontinuing Slimming Injections Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users buying such treatments should be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to original weight in about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team note that people who lose weight through dieting usually see a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Users who have stopped the medication describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if something that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural changes.
